Topiary Basics

What is the art of topiary?

Topiary making is best known from the English of the 17th century, who made geometrically designed grounds their trademark look for villas and country estates. Topiaries are sculpted plants that attain their shape by trimming and clipping, usually out of small trees and shrubs. A good plant base for topiary is an evergreen shrub with small and densely-growing leaves.

Topiary-making has two cousin plant-shaping arts on the other side of the size spectrum: penjing from China and bonsai from the Japanese, which aim to reproduce the look of old trees by cultivating saplings on racks and in ceramic trays. Topiary on the other hand aims to impose order on the natural shapes of growing plants. They add sculptural detail to your lawn, and with the right design they can be used to add to your sense of privacy.

You'll find topiary skills displayed in garden mazes and labyrinths. Usual topiary styles are ball and stick figures, cones, sculpted hedges, and gumdrops, and their permutations.

Recently, topiaries have become popular fixtures for Australian gardeners. They've become part of the backyard and garden lifestyle. With this trend, more people than ever want to learn about taking care of topiaries.

Railton, a town in northern Tasmania about twenty kilometres south of Devonport is famous for its topiary collection featuring animal shapes like wallabies and elephants, and also shepherds and spiders. You'll find them along the roadsides, and no entrance fees are charged. You can join in making topiaries in the town centre for free.

On the website "Railton town of topiary" (http://www.townoftopiary.com.au), you'll find pictures of their works-in progress, local news, a map of the town's topiaries and the story of their making.
